Kalispell’s Fountain of Home–style Fare By nancy reece jones In an age where soft-serve passes for ice cream, an authentic soda fountain—one where you get the metal mixing container with your milkshake—is a disappearing phenomenon. In fact, chances are you’ll get a blank stare if you ask most youngsters what a “soda fountain” is. 40 FLATHEAD LIVING | SUMMER 2010 Not in Kalispell, however. Kalispell is the home of Norm’s News, one of the last half-dozen original soda fountains in Montana. Norm’s News is more than a soda fountain; it’s also a newsstand and a popular eatery. It’s renowned for its scrumptious burgers (see sidebar) and tasty, all-American food. Sw eet-toothed visitors drool over the vast selection of more than 700 kinds of candy, and newshounds appreciate the 1,000 magazines and newspapers in racks that line the south wall.
